LANGUAGE PRESERVATION

Protecting and Teaching the Mankong Language

Bamukumbit (Maŋkɔŋ), commonly called Mankong, is an Eastern Grasslands language of the Southern Bantoid family spoken by about 12,000 people, mainly in Bamukumbit village, Balikumbat Subdivision, Ngo-Ketunjia Division, Northwest Region. It is also recorded under spellings such as Bamenkombit, Bamenkoumbit, Bamukoumbit, Bamunkum, Mangkong, and Mankong. The Mankong people call their language Achaba Maŋkᶗ (Mankong talk), but the language and the people are known commonly as Bamunkumbit by outsiders. In terms of ethnic origin, Mankong is most closely related to Bambalang, Bafanji, Bamali and Bamunka (all Nun languages), and the south ring languages. Achab a Maŋkᶗ has lexical similarity: 86% with Bamali [bbq], 85% with Bafanji [bfj] and Bamenyam [bce], 80% with Bambalang [bmo], 74% with Ngiemba languages (Awing, Alatening, Mankon, Pinyin and Bafut [azo]). This page supports preservation of the 2013 Latin-script orthography proposed by the Mankong Language Committee, alongside vocabulary, daily phrases, pronunciation recordings, and narrative texts.
